How to Store Chicken Safely in the Refrigerator
"How many days will the chicken stay good after delivery?" โ it's the question we get most often on WhatsApp. Fresh chicken doesn't come with an expiry sticker, so most people end up guessing. Here's exactly what we follow ourselves, with every batch that leaves our packing table.
How Long Does Raw Chicken Last?
In the fridge, kept at or below 4ยฐC.
Not cooking that soon? Freeze it the same day.
Why This Isn't Just Being Overly Careful
Raw chicken left at the wrong temperature for even a few hours can start growing bacteria you can't see, smell, or taste until it's too late. That's not us being dramatic โ it's just how meat works. The good news is that avoiding all of this comes down to two or three habits, not some complicated system.
What Temperature Actually Matters
Keep raw chicken at 4ยฐC or below. If your fridge has a specific meat or vegetable drawer, that's usually the coldest, most stable spot. Avoid the door โ every time it opens, that shelf warms up a little, and over a day that adds up.
What We Do the Moment an Order Arrives
Check the Pack First
It should be sealed and leak-free โ that's the whole point, so juices don't end up on your vegetables or your hands.
Fridge It Within the Hour
Sooner in summer. Patna's heat doesn't do raw meat any favours โ do the chicken first, before unpacking anything else.
Give It Its Own Shelf
Store it low down, below anything you'll eat raw. If a packet leaks, gravity means it drips down, not up.
So... How Long Does It Actually Last?
Raw, in the Fridge
1โ2 days, honestly. Longer than that and you're pushing your luck.
Cooked & Refrigerated
3โ4 days, kept in a sealed container.
In the Freezer
Technically safe 6โ9 months, but tastes best within the first 2โ3.
The Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Sour or Sharp Smell
The biggest giveaway โ trust your nose here, it's usually right.
Greyish Tinge
Healthy raw chicken looks pink, not dull or grey.
Sticky Surface
Should feel smooth and moist, not tacky or slimy.
Any one of these, and it's genuinely not worth the risk of cooking it anyway.
Freezing It Properly
Split it into portions you'd actually cook in one go, rather than freezing it as one big block you'll have to thaw entirely just to use half. Squeeze out as much air as you can from the bag, and jot the date on it with a marker. When it's time to cook, thaw it in the fridge overnight instead of leaving it out on the counter.
One Thing Specific to Patna
Between March and October especially, the combination of heat and humidity here means bacteria multiply faster than they would in a cooler climate. It's the same chicken, the same rules โ just less room for error. When in doubt, refrigerate sooner rather than later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Raw chicken can be safely kept in a normal fridge (0โ4ยฐC) for 1โ2 days. If you need to keep it longer than that, freeze it on the same day.
No. Raw chicken shouldn't be left at room temperature for more than 30โ45 minutes, especially in heat like Patna's โ bacteria multiply very quickly.
The earliest and most reliable sign is smell โ a sour or ammonia-like odour. A greyish colour and sticky texture can follow soon after.
Freezing keeps chicken safe, but the texture and taste can change slightly over time. For the best result, use it within the first 2โ3 months.
